I often make sure there is enough gas in the car to commute to and from work, but after the expenses, then that is IT! I too, had to choose a more feasible situation due to family circumstances, and instead of pursuing a corporate career straight out of B school, I ended up teaching and have been in the classroom every since 1998. Of course, I feel undervalued and definately, making less than $47K a year is nothing compared to my B-school classmates, it is quite difficult. The movie itself stirred up many feelings within my mind, for starters, what company still believes that interns should no longer be paid. Keep the health benefits and all the other fringes, but come on, have anyone seen the cost of tuition lately? I know that all need to prove themselve knowledgeable and efficient, but should anyone starve to do so? I happen to be in a field where I see many that have been so unaccustomed to working hard, that they practically loathe those of US who do with such extreme, that it appears like a hostile takeover. Talk about corporate, education is worst! I am still in my own pursuit of Happyness or HAPPINESS. At least, Mr. Gardner was able to overcome his obstacles, what do you think his former wife feels now about all this. Oh, by the way, I heard the book was much better than the film.

This was beuatifully written and thoughtful. As a low-income small business owner, I know how it feels to be in that crunch, or some like it. Do I ship the product on time, or buy toilet paper? It's not the same as choosing if you can eat, but it's close. So many people say "little investment" and mean hundreds or even thousands of dollars, while my family of four makes less than $1,000 a month. We're still working hard, still trying to succeed, and it is really nice to see someone notice and honestly, truly consider how hard it can be to rise up out of poverty.
