This list has been inspired by Jean, who thought to write to me while Waiting for Godot, or Dell Technical Support:
...The automated voice let me know that it may be 10 minutes for me to reach a technician. It's now been 55 minutes and climbing. While I was listening to the automated voice and annoying hold music, I realized that it may be quicker if I just contact them online. Not one support area is working! I've tried to log in, and it offers me an apology for not letting me in. What is going on?! It's amazing how quickly I could reach someone when I wanted to originally BUY the computer. Now that I've purchased it and the 30 day trial period is up, ... And to think, I paid for extra years of this "service." I give up. I'm hanging up and trying another day. Please wish me luck! Thanks for "listening."
Don't mention it Jean. I want the next time that you call Dell to be as productive as possible. We also want to spare your loved ones from talking you off the ledge. Here are some ideas of things to do/places to go while you wait for Dell Technical Support.
- Make desk art. Have you got paper clips? Rubber bands? Don't be a sourpuss, make something!
- Get all of the unpleasantness over in one fell swoop is my philosophy. While you wait for Dell Customer Support, call up Sprint and try to negotiate out of the lifetime contract you inadvertently entered into when you reduced your minutes; return those obligatory calls to relatives.
- Who says that waiting can't be enjoyable? This is a time to pamper yourself. Schedule an appointment at your local day spa--and spring for the Deluxe Day Pass, you'll need the time!
- Go to the post office. Go during the week at lunch time, or on a Saturday morning, when the line is nice and long, and turnover is roughly 20 minutes per customer.
- Finish up those Netflix movies that have been gathering dust and blocking new, fresh releases from being sent to your home.
- Stop complaining about never having enough time to get that holiday shopping done; now's your chance! Still have time left over? Finish those holiday cards!
- Have a Dell Customer Support party. Invite over others who are on hold. You don't have to go through this alone!
- Educate yourself! Complete a degree at Devry or the technical institution of your choice. Become your own technical support. Empower yourself!
- Get hands-on. Find out the name of the last person who put you on hold, fly to India, and work together on your computer. It's called teamwork!
- Create your own computer hardware company. I'm told it doesn't take long.
Jorgia,
Buying a computer, fairly expensive.
Waiting for help, a waste of good time.
Your blog priceless...

Did you hear that Dell responded to Jarvis' open letter?

Sadly however, they still don't get it. It's just a cleanup, a PR thing.

I especially liked the Party suggestion. I envisioned 20-30 people in a room with each of their cell phones on "speaker phone." Puts a little more pressure on the Dell Tech Person.

Just wanted to circle back to you . . . I managed to get that Dell documentary up and running. Thought you might get a kick out of it.

Terrific piece, Jory. I'm up for buying a new computer within the next couple of months and it's clear from the hundreds of complaints around the blogosphere over the past year or so (none as entertaining as this one) that Dell is NOT the way to go.
Thanks for the hilarious reminder.

Dell is in a painful spot. I would hardly recommend their stock. I bought a laptop from them and was lured by the 0% financing for 6 months deal. With an 800 FICO score, they turned me down for that offer after I made my purchase and stuck me with a 19% interest rate. I promptly wrote a check to pay for the balance, but got hit with $48.00 for one month. I already mailed in my class action suit claim form....

HP’s ONE multivendor alliance program is a logical step in adding more data center value for their existing ProCurve customers. Customers, however, must beware as “the devil is in the details” and even more so in “the operational complexity” that can result from trying to take advantage of infrastructure and equipment consolidation without having the supporting IP service integration properly designed and innovated.
